How can we talk to children about child poverty?

  • Queen's University Belfast, Room 0G 007 69 University Street Belfast, Northern Ireland, BT7 1HL United Kingdom (map)

Join the Centre for Children's Rights, QUB, University of Ulster and Save the Children NI to find out how we have been trying to find ways to talk to children about their experiences of child poverty in ways that are non-stigmatising and to share your thoughts and experiences.

Children have a right to an adequate standard of living and a right to have their views taken into account on all matters affecting them, yet children are rarely asked directly about their views and experiences of poverty. Save the Children NI, the Centre for Children’s Rights at Queen’s and the School of Law at the University of Ulster have been in conversation over the past year about how best to capture children’s experiences of poverty from children themselves in ways that are non-stigmatising. In this workshop, they will share some of their initial findings from a scoping study on existing child poverty research and workshops with children who are experiencing disadvantage. They want to open a conversation, drawing on audience experiences, about the best ways to work with children in Northern Ireland to understand their experiences and responses to poverty and the cost of living crisis.
